Uber organizes vision correction camp for city drivers
Tamil Nadu, 21 March 2023: Uber successfully organized vision correction camps in Chennai for commercial drivers including those on the Uber platform. These camps were set up to offer free eye tests and corrective glasses to drivers in a bid to reduce road accidents caused due to faulty vision. Over 1000 commercial drivers got a chance to get their vision tested and received vision correction support at the camp. The beneficiaries were three-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers.
Mr. Thiruvalluvan, Regional Transport Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Mr. Jayaganesh, Traffic Inspector, State Traffic Police, interacted with drivers at the concluding camp and congratulated Uber on the successful completion of its initiative to support road safety.
Speaking at the concluding eye-camp, Mr. Thiruvalluvan, Regional Transport Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu, said, “If drivers want an eye check-up done, they spend a day and lose potential earnings. However, Uber and SightSavers have made these tests available free of cost to help drivers address vision-related issues. A majority of eye tests conducted revealed that many drivers suffered from eye-related ailments. Drivers should get their eyes tested before they drive and must follow road safety protocols to ensure safety of all.”
Drivers at the camp were also sensitized on road safety awareness in partnership with the State Traffic Police to encourage them to follow traffic rules and avoid mistakes that often lead to road accidents. They also attended a session on how to accept trips digitally and make or receive payments.
Speaking about the vision correction camp, Shiva Shailendran Sekar, Director - Regional Business Operations & Supply Growth, Uber India & South Asia, said, “At Uber, we believe that our work on safety never stops. Several studies have highlighted the fact that commercial drivers often remain unaware of vision-related issues and pose a safety risk on the road. This initiative is our attempt to contribute towards a solution by testing drivers’ eyes and providing vision correction glasses for free where necessary. We hope that will help make roads safer in the city.”
Uber has partnered with a global NGO, SightSavers, which serves as the expert service provider for this initiative across 8 Indian cities.
